How to post an Instagram carousel from your desktop

You can publish a carousel straight from the browser, without sending files to your phone. The path, the ordering detail nobody warns you about, and how to schedule.

Yes, the Instagram website posts carousels

Since 2021 Instagram has accepted posting from the browser, carousels included. No third-party app, no sending images to your phone — which used to be the most annoying part, because the transfer compressed the files.

The path, in order:

  • Sign in from the browser and start a new post.
  • Select every file for the carousel at once — hold Ctrl (or Cmd) while clicking, or drag the whole set in.
  • Check the aspect ratio. The site offers crop options; pick the one matching what you exported at, or the crop eats your margin.
  • Write the caption, tag what you need to, and publish.

File order is where it goes wrong

The site puts slides in the order the files were SELECTED, which is not always the order they are named in. Selecting from last to first publishes the carousel backwards, and reordering after publishing is impossible.

Two habits fix it:

  • Name files with a leading number — 01, 02, 03 — not 1, 2, 10, which sorts 10 before 2.
  • Before publishing, step through the preview slide by slide. It takes ten seconds and it is the only chance to correct it.

Video in a desktop carousel

Same deal: video joins the selection like any image, as long as it is in the same aspect ratio as the other slides. A 16:9 clip in a 4:5 carousel gets cropped on the sides.

If the video is heavy, browser upload takes longer than the app. Wait for the bar to finish before closing the tab — closing mid-upload discards the post with no warning.

For scheduling, the path is different

The Instagram website publishes immediately. To schedule, there are two official routes:

  • Professional accounts can schedule inside the phone app itself, up to a few weeks ahead.
  • Meta Business Suite, in the browser, schedules carousels for Instagram and Facebook at once — the more comfortable option for anyone planning a whole month at a computer.

Third-party tools do this too, but they go through the same API and have nothing the two above lack. They are worth it for other reasons — organisation, team approval — not for reach.

What you cannot do from a desktop

Add music, use stickers, and most editing effects. All of that is app-only. If the carousel needs them, the flow is to build the images on the computer and finish on the phone.

For content carousels — text and image, no music — the desktop handles everything, and handles it better: no recompression in transfer, and a large screen to check every card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post a carousel from Instagram on the web?

Yes, since 2021. Start a new post, select all files at once, and check the order in the preview before publishing.

Why did my carousel publish in the wrong order?

Because the site follows the order you selected the files in, not their filenames. Number them 01, 02, 03 and step through the preview before posting.

Can I schedule a carousel from the browser?

Not from instagram.com, which publishes immediately. Meta Business Suite schedules carousels from the browser, and professional accounts can also schedule inside the phone app.
