How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

A carousel takes anywhere from 2 to 20 slides. But the number that works is rarely the maximum — and the first slide's aspect ratio rules every slide after it.
The answer: 2 to 20
An Instagram carousel holds a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 20 slides. The cap was 10 until 2025, when Instagram doubled it — so a lot of advice still floating around says 10, and it's out of date.
The 20 applies to any mix: all photos, all videos, or both in the same post.
The rule that catches almost everyone
Every slide inherits the aspect ratio of the FIRST one. Instagram doesn't allow mixed ratios inside a carousel: if slide 1 is 4:5 and slide 4 is square, the square gets cropped to fit 4:5.
In practice, the format decision is made once, at the start — not slide by slide. Build your cards in one format and the cover in another, and the crop happens without warning, usually eating the margin where your text was.
How many slides to actually use
The technical limit and the number that works are different things. For most topics, somewhere between 5 and 8 slides is enough: room to develop one idea, short enough that people reach the end.
What decides it isn't the count, it's whether every slide has a reason to exist. Three patterns that reliably work:
- A numbered list — seven mistakes calls for seven mistake cards, plus a cover and a closer. The number in the title is a promise, and the carousel has to keep it.
- A step-by-step — one step per card, in the order people actually do it.
- A single argument — the cover states the claim, three or four cards defend it, one closes.
A long carousel isn't a problem for being long; it's a problem when slide 12 exists only because there was room.
The number in the title is a contract
If the cover says "7 mistakes", the carousel needs all seven. It sounds obvious and it's the most common slip: you pick 7 slides in the editor, spend one on the cover and one on "follow for more", and deliver five mistakes.
Count before you publish: the cover and the closer are slides, they take up room, and they don't count as list items.
